AGORA

Situated in Namazgah, the Agora dates back to the Roman period with its general view. It was used for political meetings and shopping in antique times. Izmir Agora was a state agora rather than a commercial one.
Destroyed by an earthquake in 178 B.C., the Agora was rebuilt by the emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Having been found during the first excavations carried out in 1932-1941; the agora used to be a rectangle-shaped, three-floored building with stairs in the front, having a courtyard(120x180m) surrounded by columns and supported by strong arches.
The tasks like excavations, restoration, archaeological cleaning and the organization of the environment are carried on in five areas; Agora square, north gate, basilica, stoa, antique bazaar.
The most important finding in the excavations is the north gate of the agora. The relief of the Goddess Vesta found in the Agora is thought to be the part of the relief of Zeus altar that was brought to daylight in the first excavations. Apart from the statues of God Hermes, Dionysus, Eros and Heracles, man-woman-animal statues, reliefs, figures, marble, stone, bone figures, glass, mines, terracotta works were found in the excavations. The inscriptions inform us about the people who helped to the city after the great earthquake in 178 B.C. The relief group constituted of Poseidon-Demeter and Artemis, which were exhibited in Izmir Archeology Museum, were all found in the north gate.
